Morning all,

Numpty of the week award to me I think. Lid on seat of bike while I put away phone. Helmet drops to concrete floor and chips a little paint off. Is this a sufficient impact to make the lid unsafe?

Cheers all

UWI

according to the manufacturers - YES

In reality - POSSIBLE

I know a basic test you can do to find out if there is any damage - It is not 100% guarenteed, but it is used in motorsport to do an inital assessment.

As you know best advice is to always throw away and get new, and my thoughts are those purely of mine and not NMST.

I can pop over if you like later and show you how to test.

The manufacturer may offer a test service for total peace of mind.

Same as Skip - the manufacturers say yes, but if i had went with that, i would have had to chuck my helmet away 5 mins after buying my helmet, i gave it a 1 footer in the bag when i was getting on my bicycle.
I'd say it like this: if the helmet is so rigorously designed to be very tough, how can a small drop (without a head in it,) affect it so much? and my helmet was perfectly fine in my crash, i had dropped it the first time, and had loads of little paint chips where i knocked it into door handles, no problem, but i would be very hesitant buying a new lid just because it fell 2, 2.5 feet. Get skip to check it out for you, and as he said, "As you know best advice is to always throw away and get new, and my thoughts are those purely of mine and not NMST." but hey - my two cents.

A guarantee:

I buy helmet, within a week I drop it! I always chip it.

Every single one of my helmets has been replaced after a hard impact.  Have I ever replaced one after just dropping it a couple of feet onto the floor though?  You decide

my thoughts for what its worth, without the weight of a head in it, it is probably ok, but personal choice and all that
